An excellent review of twilight by haruka nakamura from Germany’s Tokafi. Thanks Tobias!

“Most musicians still consider progress an indispensable virtue. And yet, some of the most fundamental things in life are based on routine and repetition: The cycles of birth, life and death, of blossoming beauty and irreversible decay, the seasons, the principles of falling in and out of love with someone. Japanese pianist, producer and improviser Haruka Nakamura has made these the focal points of his music. To Nakamura, there is still plenty of wonder to be found in daily life, surprises lurking even in the most basic propositions. On his first two albums, a seemingly unspectacular word like “grace” delineated a compositional approach of imposing depth, as the mere sight of a garden or the sensation of fine drizzle on his skin were capable of sparking miniature-scale concertos of utmost refinement. For Twilight, he has turned, as a source of inspiration, to the time between day and night, when the delicate rays of the setting sun enter into a harmonious yet strangely ambivalent truce with the impending darkness and the world is caught in a suspenseful moment of great anticipation and infinite calm. It is a time that has come to embody entire philosophies as well as spiritual concepts, but which means nothing more and nothing less than that “we’re moving towards tomorrow” to him: Light gives way to shadow, one day ends and another one commences – that is all there is to make the moment special.

Accordingly, images of tangible tenderness, quietude and stillness, of melancholy and an inexplicable longing grace the pleasantly rough yet extremely delicate pages of the 24-page hardcover-book protecting the CD: An empty bridge drenched in grainy, blue-greenish orange, the sun shining dreamily through the leaves of a sleepy tree, the meditative silence of a bedroom, rose petals strewn across a small stretch of asphalt – just flicking through the pages takes one instantly to a place where attention turns to the inside and long-forgotten memories can suddenly seem real and fresh. If the imagery should seem just as important to Nakamura as the sounds, this is no coincidence, as snapshot-like Polaroids such as the ones collected here hold the potential of triggering sonic cues to him. The slightly blurry tones of the photography congenially capture the emotional ambivalence of the early evening’s plentiful moods, which, in turn, find themselves reflected in the music: Despite its spontaneous air, Twilight foremost breathes minute attention to detail, displaying an astounding ear for orchestration in every single instant.

Following in the footsteps of French impressionists like Monet and Satie, Nakamura is putting together his acoustic paintings dot by dot, capturing the fragile fleetingness and ephemeral intensity of a moment rather than aiming at documentary precision. Colour is everything to him and the post-romantic idea of a Klangfarbenmelodie, of using timbre as a musical tool alongside more conventional elements like harmony or melody, takes on seminal importance. Already in his instrumentational decisions, Nakamura reveals his declared intention of creating a spellbinding sonic palette to match the visual aspects of his vision: Bronze-tinged Tenor- and goldenly glowing Soprano-Saxophones, silvery Flute and pearly drum brushes sketch metaphorical allusions to an early-evening-skyline, on which his Piano-tones dance like little birds flapping their wings in excited anticipation. Even Nakamura’s chords, peacefully resting inside themselves yet imbued with a certain restlessness and inability to resolve, are pure tonal paint, freed from any kind of limiting functionality and goal-oriented direction.

It is therefore most certainly three-and-a-half-minute short “dialogo”, rather than some of the more strikingly melodic passages, which must be considered the album’s most representative cut: The opening seconds consist of nothing but seemingly random Piano-sprinkles, shimmering droplets only faintly attracted to each other by key and thematic glue. Isao Saito’s cymbals come in with a tentative, almost absent-minded sensuality, Araki Shin’s Saxophone leaves a streak of nocturnal red on the canvas and then the solitary notes coalesce into a chain of complex harmonies, each chord clearly delineated from the next and growing without apparent relation to its predecessor, floating by like shapeless clouds, gently, peacefully, from one corner of the horizon to the other, before eventually disappearing from sight.

Even though these pieces have clearly been informed by Jazz and chambermusical ensemble play, a sense of estrangement is equally pervasive. Rupturing the steady flow of short, playful and sweet duo- or trio-constellations are two long pieces around the eight- to nine-minute mark on which the prominent use of immersive electronic textures, field recordings, hazy vocals and an otherworldly pop-sensitivity create a sudden tactile shift: “Faraway” rises slowly from the tranquil patter of rain, its delayed rhodes’ chords propelled by a slick, elegant bass-theme, two Saxophone lines, one fast and associative, the other focused and ambient, enigmatically mysteriously run in sync with each other. The title track, a sultry waltz recorded in collaboration with Aspidistrafly’s April Lee, meanwhile, leans on evocative backwards sounds and the hypnotic repetition of its catchword, creating a powerful maelstrom pulling the listener straight into a vortex of warmth, light and joy. It is in these pieces, too, that the album takes the decisive step from being a pleasant collection of sensitive compositions to a work of greater ambitions and programmatic coherency.

It is telling that Nakamura doesn’t end the album on this high note, but follows it up with two short sketches, closing it out in a quiet fashion. The time of twilight is a time of transition, after all, without a real beginning and end, whose strength lies in its sense of spiritual elevation. In a sense, just like some of the most fundamental things in life, it isn’t even there at all.” – Tobias Fischer / Tokafi (Germany)

“A silent winner in the Japanese independent music scene, Haruka Nakamura’s first venture into the “sound design” genre began with a co-release with counterpart, Akira Kosemura, in 2007. Upon gaining pats on the back with that offering, as well as that of his debut album, Grace, Nakamura went on to collaborate and produce with several of Japan’s finest sound design and classical artists, and has recently dropped his second album, Twilight, to (not suprisingly) great acclaim. Released under Kitchen. Label and recorded in a studio overlooking the ocean, the new offering bringin one into a world of endless horizons, dwindling rays of light and mesmerising soundscapes – perfect for evenings under some fauna” – JUICE Singapore (September 2010)

twilight by haruka nakamura has a 2 page review and interview on 通俗歌曲·摇滚 magazine from China. Thanks Sen Li!

After nearly 2000 copies shipped to Japan alone within the first week of release, haruka nakamura『twilight』made it to No.1 on our Japan distributor’s (Inpartmaint Inc / p*dis) sales chart for July. Grateful to all stores nationwide in Japan for the unprecedented number of orders we had received, and a bigger thank you to all who went out to buy it. 『twilight』is also this month’s top staff recommendation at p*dis and below are some nice comments about the album from them :

No.1 Recommendation on Staff Chart (August 2010) -

Kitchen. - Masami Shimomura (p*dis manager)

- Shin Ohsaki (p*dis buyer)

Score: 8/10

Although Japan is known for creating talented artists such as No. 9, Sgt., Mono, and Kashiwa Daisuke, few Japanese composers are experimenting with the becalming sensibilities of jazz and electronica like Haruka Nakamura. On Twilight, Nakamura evades the sophomore slump by disdaining artificial sounds in favor of the natural. Cicadas, rain and echoed footsteps feature prominently on individual tracks. Traditional instruments and low-key production create a sincere musical atmosphere. Only a musician at one with the natural world could so successfully capture the aura and voice of a time.

While recording, Nakamura watched sunset after sunset from his ocean-view studio. The wistfulness of this experience is preserved here. By translating liminal moments into music, Nakamura captures 13 slivers of the universe’s heat, cooling them down just enough so that they will not burn. The combination of “cool,” jazzy instrumentation, field recordings and female vox drops the album’s temperature in the same way as twilight cools the day.

Nakamura’s compositions move slowly and deliberately, taking time to befriend each note and chord. In the opening track, nineteen piano notes fall before any other instruments are detected; we can even hear the creak of the wood. The doleful piano notes of “夕べの祈り” eventually defer to those of an equally doleful saxophone. Halfway through, they pause, collect their breath, and reconvene among flurries of flute and wild ambience. To the listener’s delight, the same hand of friendship is extended to gentler fields. Nostalgia is evoked through rumitive saxophone segues and poignant electronica overtones, the combination of which creates an expansive sonic experience. The album’s commodious atmosphere maintains a bare aura of honesty; it just feels real.

Because Twilight is an evening album, rather than a nighttime album, it heightens the senses by preparing listeners for the night. The shifts in texture and the spaces between the notes possess an almost regal power. Instead of lulling listeners into complacency, the album’s deceptive quietude prepares them for action. The 11th and 13th tracks, both vocal, are a call to alert living: the night is still young, and many wonders yet await.

Twilight shares a sonic heritage with label mate Fjordne, whose album The Setting Sun also features limited instrumentation and a spacious atmosphere. This similiarity is especially evident on Nakamura’s songs “Dialogo” and “The Light.” While each artist uses the shortcomings of sound and noise as an aid to emotion, Nakamura distinguishes himself by realizing the virtues of variation. The somber sax of “Memoria” illustrates an awareness of tone and sentiment, while the cathartic vocals of the title track add a sense of completeness to the collection.

As always, the Kitchen label has put great care into the packaging. The CD is encased in a 24-page, white-spined hardcover book, replete with lo-gloss photographs of fading light. To hold this artifact in one’s hands is to appreciate, as if by osmosis, that one is in possession of something magical. A bonus disc includes three extra tracks (two instrumental and one vocal), gorgeous in their own right but perhaps wisely offered separately, as they might have detracted from the album’s flow and laudably-restrained length. Operating as additional codas, they extend the album’s mood without tweaking it in any significant fashion. (Some may also receive one of these tracks as a free download; be sure to look for a small business card hidden in the sleeve.)

Nakamura envisioned this album as “a tribute to the sight of the expiring sun;” ironically, it’s his own sun that’s now on the rise.

-Tom Meagher

Well regarded as one of the most promising musicians in the elite jazz circuit in Tokyo, ARAKI Shin is featured in 6 of the 13 tracks in haruka nakamura’s latest album「twilight」. The album has received much critical acclaim especially for haruka nakamura’s exploration into acoustic ambient jazz, working with ARAKI Shin has also by no less inspired the process. One of the highlights of the album -the latter’s rejuvenation an early haruka nakamura electronic track「faraway」, injecting subtle jazz overtones with his quietly astounding saxophone performance among many other tracks. ARAKI Shin has made his guest performances on「twilight」much as like his own and we are delighted to have his works heard on Kitchen. Label. ARAKI Shin has released 2 solo albums to date namely 「A Song Book 」& 「Halls」. The site links below contain more information about the artist and his work.

The buyer of the store visits Europe several times a year to look for used books that are rare to find in Japan, and the store is already well-stocked with an impressive inventory of over 1,200 books, often attracting the attention of customers who work in the design field and curious collectors of antiques alike. In addition, the store cordons off two exhibit spaces as well as providing graphic design & bookbinding services. They also stock a small but carefully curated music selection. Kitchen.

Already in April of last year and as part of a feature about “Japanese Pastoralia” over at our friends of textura, Haruka Nakamura mentioned “the beautiful sunset” as one of his most important sources of artistic inspiration. Now, he has made an entire album dedicated to it. “Twilight” (out on July 15th on Kitchen.Label) captures the beguiling and unreal transitional phase when the day slowly sinks into the slumber of the night like a beautiful butterfly withdrawing into his cocoon to turn into a caterpillar again. The album, Nakamura’s third after two full-lengths on the Schole imprint, is his most ambitious to date and sees him outgrowing the formerly suitable “pastoralia”-label and moving into a new, more mature direction. With its goldenly gleaming horn harmonies, pristine piano progressions, chambermusical ensemble play, dreamy polyphonic chant and ethereal electronica, the work is equally part of a greyzone between the album format and a symphonic poem, between contemporary classical, ecm-jazz and a unique own vision of improvised folk. And despite it’s instantly appealing approach, it is also a remarkable sonic experiment, with the entire music having been recorded in sync with the sunset over the studio: You’re literally hearing the instrumentalists describe their impressions of twilight in real-time. Don’t be surprised if the result should move you to tears: The world around us isn’t just full of little wonders – it is full of wonderful music as well.

Every release from the Kitchen. label is special and Haruka Nakamura’s Twilight is no different in that regard. One might expect that, being a composer and pianist, his music might have its strongest assocation with Akira Kosemura’s, given that the two issued the split release Afterglowon Schole in 2007 (Nakamura subsequently released the album Grace on Schole a year later). In actual fact, the explorative style of Nakamura’s Twilight hints that there’s an even stronger bond to the music of ECM artist Keith Jarrett, and Nakamura’s understated piano playing lends his music an elegance that suggests that kinship isn’t misplaced. In fact, the music on Twilight at times resembles an acoustic jazz style sometimes heard on ECM recordings, especially when Isao Saito brings such a painterly aproach to his percussive playing (on many songs, his contributions amount to subtle dabs or bright splashes of cymbal colour rather than traditional drum accompaniment). It’s interesting that Jarrett’s The Melody at Night, With You is cited by Kitchen. as a point of reference, as Twilight often exudes a wistful melancholy that’s similarly conveyed by the ECM release. Song titles alone—“Memoria” and “Faraway,” for instance—also suggest a similar mood. However, Twilight’s theme isn’t about death and the darkness that follows twilight (one thinks of Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs as a classical exemplar) but rather the idea that sunset brings with it the promise of a new day and all the hope that that comes with it.

The album opens with the pure and unadulterated sound of Nakamura’s piano playing in “Yuube no Inori” (Evening Prayer), after which the low honk of ARAKI Shin’s sax appears like fog rolling in, with all of the sounds buttressed by the gentle unfurl of orchestral strings and a trilling flute. The bright twinkle of Nakamura’s piano playing is a constant source of pleasure throughout the recording, and the music’s intimate character is reinforced by an occasional ambient sound, such as the creak of the piano bench. It’s not a solo piano recital, however. Nakamura, Saito, and the saxophonists Shin and Akira Uchida bring a collectively explorative and meandering approach to “Koukei” (Sight) and “Dialogo” (incidentally, Jarrett isn’t the only ECM figure evoked by Twilight, as Uchida’s piping soprano saxophone playing in “Memoria” calls to mind Jan Garbarek). The elegant tenth track finds Nakamura’s piano playing elevated by the sing-song cry of Rie Nemoto’s violin. In “Faraway,” one of two eight-minute pieces, the saxophonists coil their lines gently around one another alongside the glow of electric piano chords and the breathy murmur of female voices (Janis Crunch and aspidistrafly’s April Lee contribute vocals to the recording). Near album’s end, the title track, a balladic dreamscape, appears with a lilting waltz tempo nicely complementing the ebb and flow of Lee’s half-whispered vocals, while Crunch’s soft voice makes the closing ballad, “The Light,” feel even more stirring.

The CD is accompanied by a twenty-four-page hardcover booklet that displays Polaroid photographs and words by Nakamura on paper that’s designed to wear with use and age. Such details lend the release an autumnal quality that mirrors the recording as a whole, especially when it aims to distill the dwindling rays of light at day’s end into musical form.
